Back in June 2004 Coldstream youth archery club was founded which was for the youths of Coldstream youth centre.
David Hermiston was asked if he wanted to go on a six week leaders course being run at Eastcote Archery Centre. This course was half funded by the club and Davie the other half. After three cold weekends at the Archery Centre Davie returned with his head full of knowledge.
Davie and Mark Heatley who was helping out, started to run fortnightly sessions for the youths. We started out with very basic equipment so it was decided to apply for a grant which would help us to buy more equipment. We applied in March 2004 to Youth Scotland (sports grant) and was successful. £1000.00 was granted, so new equipment was bought.
These sessions continued but it was obvious by the feedback we were receiving from the kids that their parents were very keen to try the sport of archery. So Davie and Mark drew up some leaflets and handed these out to various people and then organised to go and visit Kirknewton Archers to see how they got started. After this very productive first meeting we then invited all interested parties to attend a meeting. Tom, Neil and Norman from Kirknewton came up to support Davie and Mark at this meeting and after about an hour of discussions Coldstream and District Archers were formed.
After this very productive meeting we decided to apply to Awards for All for £5000 so we could purchase more equipment and also money to put some of our members through coaching courses.
In February 2006 we were successful and purchased new equipment which included bows, arrows, new targets, safety nets, arm bracers, tabs and spares for repairs etc, Since then we have run successful beginners courses, had open days where adults and young people came and had taster sessions of archery. Through having these sessions and try out days we have had over 100 people trying the sport of archery which resulted in over twenty adult members and ten junior members joining the club and a waiting list of over twenty people wanting to join the club.
To help, Davie and Mark attended and passed a beginners course run at Kirknewton in early May 2006. Davie and Mark with the help of our new committee decided to run our own beginners course in June 2006. As we had only just started we received help from Kirknewton Archers. Our sincere thanks go to Tom, Neil and Norman for running our very first beginners course.
